Organics blankets

Organics Compost Blankets are a compost based slope stabilisation, erosion control and vegetation establishment practice used on eroded, bare or disturbed soils, slopes and batters.

A blanket of organic compost is blown onto batters using truck mounted pneumatic blowers, which are capable of delivering the compost by hose up to 100 metres from the source – eliminating the need for machinery access over the already disturbed areas. A site-specific native seed mix is applied within the compost blanket bringing about the revegetation to match the disturbed adjacent

  • a 50mm layer of green waste derivative created by accelerating the decomposition of solid organic green waste materials under controlled conditions
  • a humus like material certified free of heavy metals, residual chemicals, viable seeds and animal and plant pathogens
  • it conforms to the Australian Standard AS4454 for composts, soil conditioners and mulches.

Matting

There are many types of erosion control matting which are designed to be used individually or in conjunction with other products like soil, hydro-mulching, turf and planting to name a few. These can provide temporary and permeant erosion control solutions.

Silt fencing

Silt fences or sediment fences are a temporary structure generally used on construction sites. They are designed to intercept and retain sediment as it travels across exposed soils while allowing drainage.

Generally, silt fences are constructed using a filter fabric (also called a geotextile) which can be made of a woven or non-woven material which is entrenched or inserted into the ground to stop the contaminated water getting underneath it. The filter fabric is attached to either timber pegs or steel posts for support.

Silt fences are good at trapping larger sized soil particles like sand and debris but have very little effect on successfully trapping fine soils like clay.

Silt fences are generally considered the last line of defence against erosion and should be used in conjunction with other forms of erosion control methods like rock check dams, jute matting, diversion drains, and sediment or retention basins. A professional, integrated approach should be used when dealing with erosion control issues, because if done wrong, it can be time consuming and very costly
